Outing Kings
& Sequoia Parks August 28th 2010 The
Eastern Sierra outing has been pushed back a month to September 18th –
19th. Next month’s outing is August 28th fishing in the Kings Canyon/ Sequoia National parks. This will be a day trip on Saturday and we will focus on the Big Meadows area. We will meet at the Forest Service Ranger Station at 7:00am for doughnuts and milk, bring your own coffee. The address to the ranger station is 35860 East Kings Canyon Road in Dunlap. It will be on the left hand side of the highway as you travel east. Bring your small stream game, light tackle, a sack lunch, and let’s catch some fish. For those of you who do not know, Jayne Ferrante with help from our club was an integral part in the restoration project of the Big Meadows area that was completed in 2009. (See link below for project report.) The project saw Jayne awarded the 2009 Conservation Award by the Federation of Fly Fishers. Report, Edison Lake July 16-18th 2010 Thank you to everyone that made the outing to Edison Lake this last weekend. Everyone had a great time. The weather was great Saturday and Sunday. The clouds dropped some rain Friday afternoon that cleaned the air and made for a beautiful drive up for those of us that had to work that day- full double rainbows! We over heard some hikers at Vermillion resort talking about how much snow is still in the back county and it was evident in the flows of the many streams and creeks in the area. Strong, yet very fishable flows mean fishing will be good well into the fall. There was a group of us fishing the southwest end of Edison Lake in float tubes and pontoon boats. In a treetop right near shore was an osprey nest with a couple of young. The mother was circling the area and would come to the nest every few minutes to check on her babies. I missed a couple of strikes because I was so focused on the majestic birds. A few people hiked to Cold Creek and had success. Some people fished Mono Creek and two separate groups went down to fish a couple of places on the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. I think everyone had a great time. The food Saturday night was OUTSTANDING! Thank you to everyone who fixed, brought, or cooked something up for dinner. American
River June 26, 2009 Next month’s outing is Saturday June 26th. This is going to be an exciting trip. We are heading north to Sacramento to fish the shad run up the American River. There is an opportunity to both wade and float the river. The ideal way is to float the river so you can move around if the fish are not in a certain area. So if you have a pontoon boat bring it, (don’t forget a life vest). We have local guide Charlie Gonzales lined up to give us tips on how to fish the American for shad. We will meet at 8:00 in the morning he will take us down the river and show us prime areas and the techniques to fish them. Then in the afternoon after lunch (about 3:00pm) he will float with us down the river and fish. If you do not have a pontoon boat that is fine. Charlie assures there is plenty of wade fishing available. He has offered a pretty sweet deal, $35 per person, to spend the day with us. I would like to get an idea of who plans to go by the General meeting May 27th. Call me or email me to get on the list or if you have any questions. Bring a sack lunch, life vest, and a flashlight. I’ll have water and sodas. After fishing in the evening we’ll find a pizza joint to meet and tell stories of the one that got away. I’ll send out an email as soon as the meeting place is determined. Any questions call or e-mail Tim Lawrence, 559-779-5338 or dhclmr@sbcglobal.net Outings Report Hume
Lake What a great day it was to be out fishing! The weather was beautiful and the fishing was outstanding. Between the Kaweah Fly Fishers and our club we had close to thirty anglers make their way though beautiful Kings Canyon Natl. Park to Hume Lake. The fishing was nonstop with several large fish brought to net. The hot setup was an intermediate line with an olive Wiggle Tail. We took a short break for bbq hotdogs and were back at it for a few more hours. Thank you to everyone that came out and made it a very enjoyable day on the water.
Outings Report Pyramid
Lake
Thank
you to those of you who made the Pyramid Lake outing. We had nine anglers
make their way to Nevada this year. The weather was good, no snow or a lot
of wind, just a little chill in the air. Saturday Todd Tyler, Phil Davis,
Leo Labbe, and I fished the Wino Beach area. Phil landed two fish while
the rest of us each brought in a fish each. Sunday we met up with Dave,
Jerry, Hank, Ron, and Mike who were all camping at Pelican Point. So we
set up the ladders and stands and got back to fishing. Phil, Todd, Leo,
and I all landed one more fish and at noon called it a day to head back to
Fresno. And wouldn’t you know just as we were tearing down out gear the
sun came out and the bite started to improve. The people that lined the
beach to the rocks were starting to hook up. After a stop off at
Cabela’s we were homeward bound. Just as we were coming up on Truckee
the snow started to fall which turned to rain on the western slope. It
turned out to be a great outing and I think everyone caught fish. If you
were not able to attend this year hopefully you can make it next year. See
you on the water, Outings Report Kern River March 13th 2010 Thank you to all who made it to the Kern River outing. We had a great weekend. Friday was a beautiful day, clear water, sunshine with a little snow on the mountain tops. Leo Labbe and I fished the afternoon with just a couple of hits but no takes. We had a great Tri tip sandwich at the Kern Brewery Friday night. Just as we were walking back to the lodge, conveniently next door, the rain started. It rained overnight which brought more snow to the mountain tops. Saturday, Jeff Traffican, Kevin Wren, PD, Fred Ramirez and I fished in the team trials that the Southern Sierra club put on. Three of us placed in the top five. The fishing was tough, the water was a cool 42 degrees, but the day turned out to be very enjoyable. It was nice to fish along with the guys from the Southern Sierra club. They were great hosts to their home water and eager to share tactics and information. We met for dinner and had our fill of good Mexican food, and then went to their club meeting. Tom Lowe from Sierra Drifters put on a presentation on the Lower Owens River and Crowley Reservoir.
Outing
Report There is a lot going on in the next two months. The Lower Kings River outing is going to be held Saturday January the 30th behind Avocado Lake. Lunch will be provided at noon. Please e-mail or call Tim Lawrence if you need directions. Join us for a day of great fishing together as a club. The weekend of February 13th is the Morro Bay surf outing. We will target surf perch in the “buckets” on Morro Strand Beach. Contact Stephen Neal wsneal@dishmail.net or Tim Lawrence to reserve a spot.
February 20th
is another opportunity to fish the Lower Kings River. We are hosting the
Southern Sierra Fly Fishers from the Kern Valley to a friendly
competition. This outing will stand as the annual “Calibrated
Fisherman” put on by KRCD. All
trout caught will be weighed and measured with the data to be used to
augment the other fish population measurement efforts done by the Kings
River Conservation
District. This is an important event and we need your participation.
Contact Tim Lawrence for more information The Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton is also in February, the 26th-28th. Most of our members go up for the day on Saturday the 27th. This is a really fun show that is dedicated to fly fishing. Hope to see you there. Just a reminder, if you plan to attend please wear you FFFC Name Tag. Come
out and fish!! Call Tim Lawrence @ 559-779-5338 or e-mail dhclmr@sbcglobal.net

Report What a great year! I know its cliché, but time flies when you’re having fun. Thank you for your participation at our club outings this past year. Having you there is what makes them fun and memorable. We had some new destinations this past year including the coast, the Kern and Truckee Rivers, all were very exciting outings in amazing parts of this beautiful state we live in. We will continue to have our traditional outing destinations along with new waters. Again thank you to those of you who came on the outings and contributed your stories, techniques, company, and talents. I look forward to serving as outings director next year. I hope you will make it a priority to come fish with us. We will have some great trips planned. If there are any suggestions or recommendations you want to make regarding the outings please e-mail me at dhclmr@sbcglobal.net Merry Christmas and See you on the water! Tim Lawrence

Report A special thank goes to Stephen Neal for putting on a great outing. It was nice to get out of the valley heat for a few days. Although there were not a large number of fish caught, this was one of our most fun and informative outings. Stephen arranged for Rob Phillips, owner of Hole in the Wall fly shop (who gave the presentation at our June meeting), to meet us at the beach on Saturday and also at the Port of San Luis bay on Sunday. He spent one on one time with everyone and that was really helpful. We all learned something new about salt water fishing. There are only three outings left for the year; Truckee, the Upper Kings, and San Luis Reservoir. These are all going to be great outings. If it’s been awhile, get out to one of these outings and catch some fish!

Report, Dinkey Creek June 13, 2009 Thanks to all that made the Dinkey Creek outing this month. A special thanks to Jeff Trafican for lending his cabin for a pre-fish breakfast and strategy session. Fifteen people made their way up the hill to brave the chilly morning weather and threat of rain. Congratulations to Linda Cottingham who caught and landed her first fish on a fly rod. Ron Richards and Hank Urbach put the pontoon boats in at Bonadella Bay on Shaver Lake and had a smallmouth fest. A small group went down stream along Ross Crossing Road and had a good day on some wild fish. It was nice to see Lance Hill bring his son to enjoy the day together. Jack Leveque caught a rare green back, ($100 bill wrapped around a stick in the middle of the creek), what’s the chance! A good time was had by all. If you did not get the chance to attend, I hope you will be able to attend a future outing.
Hume
Lake May 16, 2009 Thank you to everyone who made the trip to Hume Lake this year. Sunny, warm, with a light breeze made for an enjoyable day. We had a group of twenty or so fly fishers make their way though beautiful Kings Canyon Natl. park to the lake. The fishing was good with a few large fish brought to net. Scott Mackay, Leo Labbe, and Phil Davis all had their nets stretched by some nice fish. We took a short break for lunch and were back at it for a few more hours. Again thank you to those who made it.
Kern
River April 17th – 19th 2009 Thank
you to all who made it to the Kern River outing. WOW did we hit it right,
It was a really great trip! With the cool weather we had the week before
the outing the river flows dropped from over 1,000 cfs to 762 on Friday,
and 773 on Saturday. I checked the numbers on Wednesday 4/22 and with the
heat from the weekend they were back up over 1,400 cfs. The water was
clear and the fish were biting! Friday Jack Leveque and I arrived about
11:00 am and after setting up camp for the weekend started fishing and by
4:00 had about a dozen fish between us. Friday evening I ran into Scott
and Ron Richards at the fly shop who were roughing it at one of the local
motels. Saturday new member Lance Hill, Jack and I made it a little over
two miles upriver above Johnsondale Bridge. The water above the Fairview
Diversion dam was about 1,200 cfs and a little off color which made for
tough fishing, I managed to pull a couple of fish out of a shallow back
eddy but that was it for the area above the bridge. So after lunch time we
headed back to camp to meet up with Leo Libby and his wife, Paul and
Janice Bissonnette, and John Cameron who had a great morning with over a
dozen fish before lunch. We wished Jeff Traffican a happy birthday as he
and Mark Stephen headed for home Saturday afternoon. Phil Davis and Fred
Ramirez stopped by camp and it was back out to fish before dinner. About
nine of us meet at Fairview campground for a Tri-tip dinner. Thanks to all
who brought food for the pot-luck. We finished off a great day fishing
with a great dinner. Some of us fished Sunday before heading home and just
added to the numbers of fish caught. If
you were not able to attend I hope you will make plans to attend the other
outings this year. The outings are a great way to learn new techniques and
to share your talents with others. See
you on the water, Tim

Report, Pyramid Lake March 14-16th 2009 Thank you to those of you who made the Pyramid Lake outing. We had twelve anglers make their way to Nevada this year. The day time temperatures were in the 50’s, the water temperature was around 46 degrees if I remember. So the fish were still out in the deeper water. However, there were some really nice fish caught. I think the first fish came Saturday morning when Ian Porteus, with Clint Thaxter ready with the net, landed a nice 8.5 pound, 29.5 inch Lahontan Cutthroat at Pelican Point. Phil Davis caught a couple of fish Saturday fishing the Nets area with Steve Chavreia, Ron Richards, and Hank Urbach. Saturday night we met at Trailer #8 for a Tri-Tip Dinner and a story session. Sunday brought the wind. Patrick and Conner Kelly, along with Brian, Ian, and Scott Porteus started fishing Wino Beach, an area with a bit more protection from the wind. Brian McManus, nymphing with a red Copper John, landed a fish that was able to keep Ian from giving him a hard time. The fish was just over 30 inches. After lunch those that were fishing Wino went to Pelican Point to meet up with Dave Burris and Jim Jacobson. Ron Richards pulled in a beautiful fish around 28 inches. Phil Davis and Jim Jacobson had a double hookup towards the end of the day when the sun was setting behind the Tule Peak, the perfect end to a great day. Oh, and Phil reeled in another fish that his chair caught. It was a beautiful fish, 30 inches, but it doesn’t count when you put your rod down and walk away, especially when you are on shore 80 feet away from your ladder! Monday morning we were off to fish Pelican Point again and met Dave who said the wind was howling up there, so back to Wino where the wind wasn’t so bad. Hank had a fish bump but no take. So after a short stop at the Cabela’s in Reno it was back to Fresno. Again thanks to all that were able to make the trip. It was a great weekend with some big Lahontan Cutthroats. If you were not able to attend this year hopefully you can make it next year. See you on the water, Tim Lawrence
